Kasabian - virgin festival - Baltimore

My friends and I went to the Virgin festival in Baltimore in the USA and had a fantastic time. Rather than doing a review of everything I’ll go band by band.

First off are Kasabian.

Despite being from the midlands this band has a very madchester dance rock sound; this is especially noticeable on their early material. Though I like this style of music I prefer their second album, which is more anthemic and is theme based (war and why it’s bad); it has some great tracks on it such as Empire and Shoot the runner.

Kasabian had the pleasure of opening up the main stage of the festival at high noon. It’s not a great spot to have, but even at this time there were a few thousand people to play to. We went pretty close to the front, well within eye contact of the band. From the crowds reaction it was obvious that not many people knew the band; we were dancing and singing along from the outset, as were a few other isolated people. This meant that the band saw us a lot and gave us plenty of smiles, though I have the feeling that these could have been more directed at Liz and Shawna than Noel and I :)

The sound was pretty spot on, and after a few songs, you could feel that Kasabian were winning over the people who had not heard of them before, and though not jumping up and down like us many of the crowd had started to sway with the music. It was pretty obvious that Kasabian were enjoying themselves, and once they had played the anthemic Empire I feel that they may have increased their record sales in the USA by another thousand or so. They finished with LSF (Step on it, electronic, the troops are on fire!) and either a few people must of recognised this tune from the Gotham street racing game or Kasabian had completely won the crowd over as many people seemed to be really enjoying it.

All in all Kasabian put in a very solid set and the thirty odd thousands people who were probably still driving to the race course had been truly short changed.
